Movie Night Menu

Shorter days and colder nights provide the perfect excuse to host a home movie night.  Once you’ve chosen the film, invited your guests, the only thing left to do is plan the menu.  Dining out at the movies is not for the health conscious, but like all things in life, it is fun to walk on the wide side and toss caution to the wind…..even if living dangerously means feasting on milkshakes, chocolate and pizza.  Turn your kitchen into a modern day concession stand with simple party foods to compliment any movie night.

Caramel MilkShake:  The perfect date for a salty popcorn bag….this sweet delight takes minutes to prepare.

  • Ingredients:  2 scoops of Vanilla ice cream, 1 cup of ice cold milk, 1/3 cup of Caramel.
  • Directions:  Add the ingredients to a blender, and blitz until smooth and creamy.  Before serving, drizzle caramel around the rim of the glass, then pour in the milkshake.  Top with a drizzle of caramel and serve.
Salty Sweet Popcorn:  An English treat, the movies are full of salty and sweet popcorn, I could never decide so I always went for a mix.
  • Ingredients:  1 Bag of natural unbuttered microwave popcorn (you could always hand pop it if you have the time, but…..), powdered sugar, salt, 1 teaspoon of butter.
  • Directions:  Pop the popcorn according the the directions, and then pour into a large mixing bowl.  While resting, melt the butter and then drizzle over the top before sprinkling powered sugar and salt over the popcorn.  Mix well before serving.
Rocky Road Fridge Bars:  With a cooking time of 20 minutes, it would be shame not to add these to the menu.
  • Ingredients: 1 bag of Hershey’s semi sweet milk chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon of honey, 2 cups of small marshmallows, 3 Graham Crackers, 1/2 cup of finely chopped nuts and a handful of dried fruits.
  • Directions:  Fill a medium saucepan halfway with water and bring to a rolling boil and then top the saucepan with a glass mixing bowl large enough to rest on top (a double boil).  Add chocolate chips, butter, and honey to the bowl and mix until melted.  Once the melted mixture is thick and mousse like, remove from heat and add the nuts and marshmallows to the chocolate. Gently fold until fully mixed and dough like. Place your Graham Crackers on a sheet of wax paper and then roll the chocolate dough over the top of them until fully covered and level on top before placing in the refrigerator to set, and then chop into small bite site bars.
Pizza Sticks:  Easier to eat than slices, these sticks make great finger foods. You can dress these up, or down depending on your topping and sauce…..my favourite is pesto with grilled tomatoes.
  • Ingredients:  10 Ounces of Ready Made Pizza Dough, 8 Ounces of Pizza Sauce, Tomato Passata or Pesto Sauce, 1 Cup of Grated Mozzarella Cheese, and any topping of your choice.
  • Directions: Preheat your oven to 375F. Roll your pizza dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a 10 inch square shape. Top with pizza sauce and cheese, adding any toppings you wish last. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until the pizza dough is golden brown. Remove from the oven and slice in long strips or sticks before serving.
